CELSI Frontiers Seminar: Supporting Decarbonisation in the Town of Partizánske
Sept. 30, 2024
CELSI Frontiers Seminar, that will take place on October 4, 2024, 11:30-13:00 CET at CELSI office, will deal with social research of CELSI junior researcher Pavol Bors about decarbonisation in the Town of Partizánske.
Abstract:
The Upper Nitra region, which includes the town of Partizánske, faces unique challenges regarding decarbonization and a just transition in Slovakia. The region's transformation, primarily due to the cessation of lignite mining and its use in the Nováky power plant, significantly impacts employment and the socio-economic development of the area. This situation necessitates public policies that address both environmental concerns and social transformation, emphasizing collaboration with the local population and industry representatives.
Partizánske is specifically impacted by industrial decline, leading to population loss and efforts to revitalize former industrial zones. The town struggles to maintain public services amid decreasing residents, as many now commute from surrounding areas. Air quality issues, influenced by its geographical position and nearby coal mining, further complicate the situation.
The city's main motivation for transforming its heating sector is to create a modern, eco-friendly environment that enhances residents' quality of life. Planned heating sector transformations may provide long-term benefits, particularly in ecology, air quality, and energy sustainability, along with potential economic gains from reduced dependence on energy resources. However, the population may not fully recognize these advantages, making effective communication and implementation of these measures essential.
This report outlines the attitudes and perceptions regarding the upcoming heating sector transformation among various stakeholders in Partizánske, including local government officials, city enterprise representatives, civil society, and residents. It details the data collection and analysis process, describes the current state of heating in Partizánske, presents research findings, and concludes with key insights and recommendations for the town.
